Betway is now forced to re-examine their UK media structure
Times are changing at Betway and in the UK gambling sector. Several UK Gambling Commission interference’s and law changes aside – many of which are causing a great deal if distress and changes to how UK bookies operate – some deals have ended, including the one between Betway and Starcom UK. As a result, the bookie are now forced to re-examine their UK media structure.
On the face of it, this initially sounds like pretty bad news. However, before players in the UK start to worry that Betway will be pulling out of the UK sports betting market, they need to understand the situation. This has little to do with the popular UK sportsbook’s actual ability to offer sports bets to UK fans, merely how they advertise themselves to the UK sports betting population.
The only thing that has effectively ended is the association with Starcom, a media planning agency which Betway used to promote its brand. Although there has been no official reason given for the termination of the partnership, we understand that Betway is already seeking out new marketing agencies to represent it with the help of AAR.
Will this impact sports bettors in the UK?
Not really. Whenever a new marketing agency takes the reins of a company, you can expect certain changes in the way that a UK sportsbook operates – but only in the sense of how it advertises itself. In fact, on many occasions, such a termination in partnership has turned out for the best. If Betway didn’t like the way they were being advertised and presented to UK consumers, there is every chance that a new marketing agency will be able to revitalize the sportsbook and come up with new ways to represent Betway, and lure UK bookie fans into placing bets there. Given that they have just signed a shirt sponsorship deal with West Ham United (worth millions of pounds), Betway isn’t leaving the UK shores at any point in the immediate future

William Hill headhunts
William Hill has announced that they have recruited a new CFO (Chief Financial Officer), as the spot was filled by the incoming Ruth Prior. Prior will start her task this week, despite initially being headhunted by the major UK sportsbook over six months ago. William Hill began their search for a new chief financial officer over a year ago, although in March the sportsbook and betting giant announced that it had successfully headhunted Prior from WorldPay. Whilst there, she was the Chief Operations Officer and Deputy Chief Financial Officer from 2013 until last week.
Who is Ruth Prior?
Ruth Prior joins the team with a wealth of experience and leadership skills behind her. She is widely regarded as an excellent finance executive in the entertainment and technology industry. Now she will be tested by being placed in charge of the betting company’s controller ship and treasury sectors. Prior’s immediate job will be to stabilize the position in the UK market, which has been in decline of late. She will also be tasked with turning around its international popularity and working with its Openbet platform.
A renaissance for William Hill
Prior’s main objectives will be to create something of a renaissance over at William Hill, with the high-street bookie only now just managing to turn around the bad run of form in their digital divisions. Prior to her arrival, William Hill announced an 11% decline in profits for the first period of 2017. The bookie has also hired a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in Philip Bowcock, to bring in further investors, and showcase what the company can offer in the online gambling industry. Things certainly seem to be changing over at William Hill sportsbook, but will filling the managerial posts be enough to see them climb back up the sportsbook pyramid? The future appears bright for now at least.

Betting world got serious, particularly Paddy Power Sportbook
This week, the online sports betting world got serious, particularly where the UK is concerned. Some of the leading UK betting companies have joined forces to put together a package worth £8 million which they hope will be used to highlight the dangers of problem gambling. At the same time, Paddy Power sportsbook have decided to toughen their rules regarding affiliates, so that false advertising is whittled out of the industry.
£8 million to highlight problem betting
The new fund from a host of the UK’s biggest sportsbooks has been made by Remote Gambling Organisation, a trade body of betting companies, who work with the Advertising Association to ensure that gambling advertising focuses on problem gambling as well as adverts to appeal to players with big bonuses galore.
There have been growing calls from Tom Watson – Labour Party deputy leader – to ban sportsbook sponsorship in football, to restrict fixed odds betting terminals in UK high-street bookies, and to highlight problem gambling. The move may be a way of appeasing some of those hard-line strategies to regulate UK sports betting.
Paddy Power gets tough on affiliates
At the same time, one of the UK’s leading sportsbooks, Paddy Power, has made a move which should aim to end false advertising in the UK. Paddy Power Betfair have decided that the affiliate market needs closer regulation, particularly when it comes to dubious promotions. The sportsbook giant has now placed into effect a series of rules and regulations which will see affiliates face a one-strike rule, should they false advertise or promote the sportsbook in a dubious manner. Sky Betting and Gaming had earlier made similar moves, although in their case they completely axed their affiliate program. In the UK, the UK Gambling Commission considers operators responsible for the work by affiliates, so Paddy Power Betfair seems to be taking this problem very seriously.
Joining Paddy Power or Betfair are still top dogs
Of course, none of these issues should put you off playing at Paddy Power, Betfair or other leading UK sportsbooks. If you are safe, control your gambling, and don’t mind dropping a few quid on your favourite sporting events, UK sportsbooks like Paddy Power and Betfair are perfectly safe places to place bets.
Rio Ferdinand laces up his gloves for Betfair
The latest news shocking the sports world is that former Manchester United and England defender, Rio Ferdinand, is set to lace up his gloves and turn to boxing now that he has retired. Rio will be training to compete to win a title belt, and the response has been mixed. Many fans are delighted that Rio will be making the jump over to boxing, others still think it won’t happen, whilst some believe that Rio will be on the receiving end of many pastings. Betfair certainly believes in Rio, though, so much so that they have even got behind him.
Defender to Contender
Betfair are launching a new project, known as Defender to Contender, and it will see Rio Ferdinand lace up his gloves and fight as part of the betting exchange’s program. Assisted by Betfair and a team of conditioning and boxing experts, Rio hopes to be able to qualify for his BBBOC (British Boxing Board of Control) license, before starting the long path down the road to a world title.
Some of the people backing Rio include former WBC super-middleweight champion and the trainer of Team GB, Richie Woodhall. Speaking on the move, Rio has said that “Boxing in an amazing sport for the mind and body. Clearly, not everyone can become a professional boxer – but with the team of experts Betfair are putting together, and the drive I have to succeed, anything is possible.”
The Defender to Contender project is the latest in a long line of ingenious ideas from the sportsbook. Last year, they helped Victoria Pendleton move from Olympic cyclist to Cheltenham jockey, in a similar project that won them a lot of fame.

If you fancy having a say on whether Rio will be a flop in the boxing world, you can sign up to Betfair and get your wagers in today. Busy week for betfair with new-advisors and brexit-odds
Betfair have quite a unique niche in the UK online gambling market. They are widely regarded as the UK’s leading betting exchange, and almost everybody in the sports betting industry has heard of them. This week, they are set to enter sports punter’s minds one more, following the announcement that Betfair have just appointed a new governance advisor, and that there have been some interesting wagers staked on Brexit.
The leading UK sportsbook recently announced that Jan Bolz would be taking over as a new Independent Director over at Paddy Power Betfair (PPB). From 2011 until 2016, Mr Bolz served as Chief Executive over at Tipico Sportwetten. In his past, he has always worked with video games developer Electronic Arts, and as Managing Director of the Bertelsmann Music Group in Munich, Germany.
The new Governance Advisor will surely be able to find a way to spice up gameplay over at Betfair, to enable them to continue to compete with other leading UK sportsbooks on the net. However, that isn’t the only piece of news to come out of this week.
Rather surprising set of bets on Brexit at Betfair
Earlier in the week, Betfair announced that they have received a rather surprising set of bets on Brexit. Punters at the UK sportsbook have taken no notice of the passage of the EU Withdrawal Bill and Brexit (which may have major ramifications for UK sports punters) and started wagering money on the UK not leaving the European Union by the March 2019 deadline. In fact, Betfair’s politics section has odds of 4/7, leading many to place bets that there will be a 63% chance that the UK remains part of the EU when the deadline passes.
Despite the sudden turn of events, Betfair spokesperson Katie Baylis commented that “it’s actually seen as more likely by punters that Theresa May will leave her post as Prime Minister before the UK leaves the EU, with odds of that happening currently at 1/2.”
You can get a slice of the action if you decide to sign up and play with Betfair, today, where the UK sportsbook is offering all new players a free £100 bet when they place 5 bets of £10 or more in sporting events (or political bets for that matter).
New costumer offer. Place 5x£10 or more bets to receive £20 in free bets.Repeat up to 5 times to receive maximum £100 bonus. Min odds 1/2 (1.5). Exchange bets excluded. Full T&C Apply.
Betway new sponsor of Werder Bremen
It is certainly not uncommon to find some of the United Kingdom’s leading online sportsbooks and betting shops doing sponsorship deals with a host of the country’s leading football clubs. After all, many of the Premier League and Championship’s more noticeable and famous teams have such deals, if not on their shirts, then on advertising hoardings around the stadium. Leading UK sportsbook Betway has gone one further this week, after announcing a deal with a leading German football club, Werder Bremen.
Betway joins forces with a proven winner
True, Werder Bremen is not Bayern München or Borussia Dortmund, but the 4-time Bundesliga champions are certainly no slouches in the German football league, either. The new deal sees the UK sportsbook expand its already impressive portfolio after they previously agreed to sponsor a host of 2. Bundesliga clubs, including Dynamo Dresden, Eintracht Braunschweig, St. Pauli, and Union Berlin. With the new Bundesliga season due to kick-off in a matter of days, this is a very exciting time for the online sportsbook.
Betway keeps up their presence in the football world
As well as sponsoring a number of Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs, Betway have also done deals in the Belgian League. They are now the main sponsor of the Croky Cup (Belgian Cup), as well as the champions of the Belgian Jupiler League, RSC Anderlecht – a major coup for one of the UK’s smaller sportsbooks. The sportsbook giants are also currently the main sponsor of English Premier League side, West Ham United. The 4-0 battering the Hammers received at the hands of Manchester United last weekend gained coverage around the world, no doubt boosting the popularity of the sportsbook even further.
Join the Betway revolution
If playing Betway suddenly sounds appealing, the online sportsbook has a great offer to throw your way to sweeten the deal. Betway is currently offering all new players the chance to claim a welcome bonus worth up to £30 when they sign up and deposit as a new player today.
New Welcome Bonus for Bet365 Players
The Premier League returned to action last weekend, and to celebrate, one of the UK’s most loved online sportsbooks has just showcased a new welcome bonus for players. Bet365 has already been receiving a lot of coverage with streaming of live matches, and now they are going one step further to cater to footy fans in the digital age.
A new offer from Bet365 Sports
The online sportsbook is gearing up to offer all new players who decide to sign up and place their favorite sporting wagers at Bet365 a welcome bonus which is worth up to £200 in total. After making a first deposit of at least £10, all newbies will be invited to double that deposit, courtesy of a 100% match. The total amount that can be claimed is two-hundred notes, as we’ve said.
Crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s
Of course, like all sportsbook bonuses and promos, there are a few terms and conditions which sports fans may wish to consider before deciding to snap up this offer with open arms. Firstly, players are going to need to check the deposit method they use to claim the offer. Neteller and Skrill deposits are not valid for the offer, so VISA and MasterCard, PayPal and other e-wallets seem to be the way to go. Players also need to claim the welcome bonus offer within 90 days of registering for an account, or it will no longer be valid. That’s pithily stuff considering the value for money you could get with this offer, though.
Start your new season in style with Bet365 Sports
The new welcome bonus – the ideal Premier League starter pack – is available to claim right now over at Bet365 Sports. If you fancy going digital for the new season, then Bet365 sportsbook may be for you, with its live streamed matches and its handy and size-able welcome bonus, who wouldn’t mind kicking-off with a tasty bonus like this?
